What if a professional sports team measured success not only by the games it won—but by the lives it changed?
That question stayed with me after my conversation with Joel Katz, Vice President of Community Impact for San Diego FC, on the latest episode of Conscious Curiosity SD.
San Diego FC was showing up for our community before the team ever kicked a ball.
The club’s vision goes far beyond building a winning soccer franchise. It is working to create opportunity, develop young people, and become a team that truly belongs to all of San Diego.
At the heart of that vision is a powerful belief:
Talent is universal. Opportunity is not.
Through its fully funded Right to Dream Academy, San Diego FC is removing financial barriers while developing young people as students, leaders, citizens—and yes, potentially professional athletes.
Joel and I explored:
- Why listening to the community came before developing programs
- How sports can bring people from different backgrounds together
- Why developing the whole person matters more than producing athletes
- The challenge of protecting a long-term purpose while facing pressure to win now
- What San Diego FC hopes to change in our community over the next 25 years
What impressed me most was the intention behind everything they are building.
San Diego FC doesn’t simply want people to attend its matches. It wants San Diegans—even those who never enter the stadium—to experience a positive impact from the club’s presence.
That is more than community outreach.
That is an organization building its purpose into its identity from day one.
